How to Ride

picture of someone reading a route map Riding the bus is easy! Just read our How to read a schedule & map section and then you'll be ready to ride the bus!

Reading Schedules and Maps

1.

On the route map, find the timepoint (the large number in a circle on the map, which corresponds with a column of times) closest to where you will catch the bus.
2. Determine the direction you are heading. Next, find the timepoint closes to your destination.
3. Read down the list of times under this timepoint to find the time you want to leave.
4. Read across to the timepoint closest to where you want to go. The time listed in the column tells you what time you will arrive at your destination.
5. Or, if you need to get somewhere at a specific time, such as work or an appointment, just do the opposite. Look for the time you would like to arrive under the timepoint closest to where you’re going. Then read back to the timepoint where you are coming from to find out when you should catch the bus.

Riding the Bus

Be sure to arrive at the bus stop sign, shelter or far side of any street intersection at least five minutes early. (Express routes stop at designated stops only) Watches and clocks seldom agree and a minute or two, could mean a missed bus.
Look for the sign on the front of the bus with the route number and name. When you see your bus approaching, signal to the driver, with a wave, that you would like to get on.
As you board the bus, show your pass or drop your money in the farebox next to the driver. You can use dollar bills or coins, but the farebox does not make change. You will only receive a card with a credit toward a future ride.
Transfers are free. Please inform the driver if you need to transfer to another bus to arrive at your final destination. The driver will give you a pass good for one hour and 30 minutes, except on routes 5 & 8, these transfers are good for one hour and 45 minutes. You may use it to board any other route during this time.
Take your seat and watch for your stop. Press the bell strip one block before your desired stop.
